Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Training program

Discover an innovative program of training developed for Aboriginal Victorians who want to learn more and potentially work with Victorian Aboriginal cultural heritage. This training covers a variety of topics, that may be applied across a range of areas, with the overall focus on the preservation and management of Victorian Aboriginal cultural heritage in accordance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006.

Past and Present: Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Workshops

This three day workshop runs twice each year. It aims to build on existing knowledge and skills within the community. It provides essential training for current field-based officers, other staff in community organisations and those with a role in evaluating heritage values. It is also a pathway course into Certificate IV in Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management (ACHM) delivered annually by La Trobe University.

What does it cover?

The workshop introduces the main themes of Aboriginal cultural heritage management in Victoria, highlighting the function of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 and key industry requirements.

Eligibility

You have the opportunity to attend these workshops through a nominations process. Nominations are open to all Aboriginal Victorians and is especially tailored to staff and workers from Victorian Aboriginal community organisations involved in Aboriginal cultural heritage management such as RAPs, new or existing community field based officers and people with a working role in Aboriginal cultural heritage assessment, planning and general land management.

This may include, but is not limited to, local government planners, field based land managers within government departments, catchment management authorities and public land committees of management.

How do I apply?

Nominations for the two 2017 workshops will be announced next year and applications will be posted here.

Participant numbers are capped at 30 per workshop so get in early to secure your place.

Certificate IV in Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Training Management 

On completion of the three day workshop, you can apply for a position in the Certificate IV in ACHM course delivered by La Trobe University.

The Certificate IV in ACHM is the first nationally accredited qualification course of this kind to be offered in Australia.

On this course you get to travel around Victoria, exploring local cultural heritage 'On Country'  with Traditional Owners, Elders and cultural heritage professionals as trainers.

The knowledge and wisdom of Elders as well as the cultural knowledge of land management, conservation and oral history of the students are combined in the field and classroom to create a unique and powerful learning environment.

How is this course delivered?

The Certificate IV in ACHM is delivered as 9 one-week residential training blocks over the course of one year. It has:

  • 12 core units of competency
  • 2 elective units.

Eligibility

If you are a Victorian Aboriginal Traditional Owner or Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders resident and/or working in Victoria, you are eligible to do this course.

The course aims to suit most learners, with some Recognition for Prior Learning available in some cases.

How do I apply?

Applications are open all year to individuals who have completed one of the three day workshops but the course only runs once a year.

Is there funding available for this course?

You will be funded by Aboriginal Victoria throughout the course. All learning materials will be provided. Meals, accommodation and reimbursement for transport costs, if you are away from home, are also provided.

There are no tuition fees, service or amenities fees to pay.
