A major desalination plant is planned for development in the Wonthaggi region to supply up to 150 billion litres of water a year to Melbourne, Geelong and South Gippsland and Western Port towns. Construction of the plant is scheduled to commence in 2009 in order to start delivering water by the end of 2011.

The Minister for Planning has released his Assessment under the Environment Effects Act 1978 which concludes the EES process. The Assessment has been provided to statutory decision-makers to inform approval decisions on this project.
