The Sentencing Advisory Council is an independent statutory body established under the Sentencing Act 1991 to provide statistical information on sentencing to the judiciary, the government and the public, to conduct research on sentencing, to gauge public opinion, to consult on sentencing matters with government departments and other interested persons, including the general public and victims of crime, and to advise the Attorney-General on sentencing matters.
