Jamie and Carmel

One of the benefits of the NDIS is that the family has been able to directly employ a carer that Jamie gets along well with.

Jamie lives in Kyneton only a few doors down from his parents, including his mum, Carmel.

Jamie recently transitioned to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), ahead of the official roll out of the scheme in the Loddon Area from 1 May 2017.

Jamie was identified as eligible for an early transition to the NDIS due to his immediate need for support.

Before that, Jamie was living at home. Carmel says “he was a real handful”. He didn’t want to be there anymore and he moved into supported living.

“He saw his siblings move out of home and do their thing and 2 of them were younger than him, so he got to the stage where he was like I want to be like everyone else and move out and do the same thing.”

Jamie now proudly lives independently with support through the NDIS. As part of his NDIS plan, Jamie has a carer and is building his independent living skills such as travelling to see his siblings and preparing meals.

“He’s only about 6 doors up from us. He pops down usually every day and visits – more to visit his dogs than his mum and dad! But that’s ok,” Carmel says.

One of the benefits of the NDIS is that the family has been able to directly employ a carer that Jamie gets along well with.

“Jamie’s thriving. He’s happy, he’s achieving his goals ... things in life that he wants to achieve, and that’s the most important thing.”

Overall, Carmel says they’re all very happy with Jamie’s NDIS plan and how things are going.

“We’re not going to be here forever so he needs to learn to be as independent as possible and he’s achieving that which is great for him – 100 per cent.”
