Food safety law reform in Victoria

The Food Amendment (Regulation Reform) Bill 2009 was introduced into the Victorian Parliament on 10 June.

The Bill proposes amendments to the Food Act 1984. It contains major changes designed to improve the governance and performance of Victoria's devolved food regulatory system. If enacted, it will give Victoria a more effective system for regulating the safety of food sold for human consumption.

Without compromising food safety, it will enable significant reductions in the regulatory burden on many food businesses and not for profit enterprises.

A more graduated regulatory regime, in proportion to the risks associated with the food handling activities of different kinds of business, is proposed.
