Human Swine Flu (H1N1 Influenza)
The Australian Government influenza pandemic alert has been changed to the 'Protect' phase across most Australian states.
In Victoria the 'Protect' phase means we will continue to focus our efforts on people in the community who are most at risk of severe illness.

- Only confirmed cases of Human Swine Flu will need to be quarantined.
- Schools will no longer be closed when there are confirmed cases.
- If you are unwell with flu-like symptoms, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others.

Victoria is now in a modified 'Sustain' phase to manage the impact of the H1N1 Influenza 09 (Human Swine Flu) in our community.
- The virus has so far been mild and can be compared with the normal winter flu.
- Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.
Only confirmed cases of Human Swine Flu will need to be quarantined.
- Confirmed cases of swine flu will need to be quarantined at home for three days.
- Household members of confirmed cases may also be given antiviral medication, Tamiflu, as a preventative measure. Discuss this with your doctor.
- Household members do not need to be quarantined.
- Your doctor may order antiviral medication based on the onset of symptoms and medical need.
- If a confirmed case is not on antivirals, they will need to be quarantined for seven days.
The Victorian Government will focus on supporting those in the community most vulnerable to influenza.
- This will include people in aged care facilities, special developmental schools and hospitals.
- The Victorian Government will provide day-to-day support for those most in need in the community.
- Dedicated flu clinics continue to operate for the very sick across the state to support our emergency departments.
- Only present to your hospital if you are in serious need of medical attention.
Schools will no longer be closed when there are confirmed cases.
- Special developmental schools will continue to be closed when cases are confirmed and other settings such as child care centres, will be managed on a case by case basis.
Your best defence against the flu is good hygiene practices.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, and especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
- Throw the tissue in a plastic-lined rubbish bin after you use it.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
If you are unwell with flu-like symptoms, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others.
- Call your GP for medical advice.
- If you are ill and you present yourself to school or work, you may be asked to return home.
- Be responsible. We all have our part to play in reducing the spread of H1N1 influenza 09 (Human Swine Flu).
