Lend a hand to threatened species
Celebrate the arrival of spring and National Threatened Species day on 7 September by volunteering your time to help endangered species like the Helmeted Honeyeater. Pledge now at Act4Nature.org.au
In 1990, the Helmeted Honeyeater was on the brink of extinction with a mere 50 in existence.
Their numbers are steadily increasing thanks largely to the efforts of dedicated volunteers who are part of the Helmeted Honeyeater Recovery Team.
Department of Sustainability and Environment Act4Nature Campaign Manager Julia Davies said that everybody has the power and the ability to help endangered species such as the Helmeted Honeyeater.
"This month, Act4Nature is encouraging people to celebrate the arrival of spring and National Threatened Species day by volunteering their time and efforts to a worthy environmental project," Ms Davies said.
In Victoria there are a wide range of conservation projects to suit everybody's skills and interests -- all crying out for helping hands.
"People can get involved in hands-on activities like revegetation and weed removal or environmental monitoring of wildlife and flora," Ms Davies said.
"Some volunteers spread the word by educating others about the natural environment, and others might provide administrative and logistical support.
"Environmental volunteering has other benefits as well, including learning and improving skills, meeting new people, enhancing CVs, broadening professional networks, developing a sense of belonging, enjoying new experiences and improving self esteem.
Why wait? Advancing causes we believe in by contributing to the health and vitality of places and wildlife we value really delivers results -- and feels great!

Act4Nature is a 12 month campaign involving the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Zoos Victoria, Museums Victoria, Parks Victoria, Royal Botanic Gardens, and Sustainability Victoria.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of biodiversity by encouraging people to focus on a different action each month to help the environment and promoting the concept that individual actions do make a difference.
