New digital emergency tools for Victorians

Victorians can now access real-time emergency information from the new VicEmergency website and the updated FireReady app.

The new VicEmergency website is the primary site for fire and flood warnings and shows emergency and shows emergency incidents in Victoria on a real-time Google Map display. The site includes bushfire and grassfire incidents, as well as other emergencies such as storms, power outages and traffic incidents. Visitors can also access planning and recovery information on fire and flood.

A single all-emergencies website supports the Victorian Government's all hazards, all agencies approach to emergency management. The Fire Services Commissioner is responsible for VicEmergency, and ownership will move to Emergency Management Victoria (EMV) once EMV is established during 2014.

The FireReady app, which provides fire warnings and information, has been rebuilt ahead of the 2013-14 summer so it can easily withstand the high levels of demand expected during peak fire periods. It provides access to official warnings, information on planned burns and other types of incidents across Victoria attended by Country Fire Authority (CFA), the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB).

FireReady app users will be able to see a live incident map for their current location advising them of incidents, warnings, fire danger ratings and total fire bans. Users will automatically receive push notifications for fire danger ratings of Severe, Extreme and Code Red, as well as for days of Total Fire Ban.

All Victorians need to access more than one source of emergency warnings. For fire warnings this summer, as well as visiting www.emergency.vic.gov.au and checking the new FireReady app, you can check CFA's Facebook page and Twitter, listen to local radio or ring the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.
