Law Week 11-17 May 2009

Law Week 11 - 17 May 2009Law Week invites Victorians to discover the rich culture of our legal system and celebrate the vital role it plays in our society with free events including seminars, displays and guided tours. Almost all of the activities are FREE.

"This year we plan to connect people with a whole range of legal services and introduce them to people working in the law. For example at Courts Open Day they will have the opportunity to meet a Judge, meet a Magistrate and even meet the Juries Commissioner. During the week many services will hold public sessions to introduce people to where services are located and what they do." says Executive Director, Ms Joh Kirby.

Don't Get Scammed

In 2008, Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) received more than 3,700 call enquiries or complaints about scams, a 30 per cent increase from the previous year. The top five scam enquiries to CAV in 2008 were:

  1. Bogus Lottery Schemes
  2. Prize Awards
  3. Unauthorised Advertising
  4. Advanced Fee Fraud (Nigerian scams): and
  5. Investment and Financial Scams: including horse race betting software

The cost of scams to Victorians is estimated to be almost $130 million a year with scams designed to trick people into giving away money or personal information.

Scams come in many forms and scammers will try and contact you by mail, email, telephone, over the Internet and door-to-door. Tips to avoid scams include:

  • Don't respond immediately to any offers or deals. Stop and take time to check they are genuine
  • Never send money or give your credit card, bank account or other personal details to businesses that contact you out of the blue
  • Don’t rely on glowing testimonials provided by the seller; find solid evidence of from independent sources
  • Never click on a link provided in an unsolicited email as it will probably lead to a fake website designed to trap you
  • never use phone numbers provided with unsolicited requests or offers as it will probably connect you to scammers who will try to deceive you

CAV runs a 'Dob-in-a Scam' service. To look up or report a scam, visit www.consumer.vic.gov.au or call 1300 558 181.
