Play It Safe by the Surf

Victorians have been urged to be vigilant in and around water as summer begins, with three million people expected to visit patrolled beaches this season.

This year's campaign has begun, with a series of mobile billboards, print and radio advertisements featuring basic but essential safety tips that include:

never swim alone
swim between the flags
look before you leap
make sure someone is looking out for you when you are in the water
know what do to in an emergency
always watch young children in and around water.

Refer to the Victorian Water Safety Guide Summer 2008-2009 for helpful information about water safety, emergency numbers, locations of patrolled beaches, and information about how to get involved in water safety activities.

The Spiegeltent moves on

Melbourne has just hosted another successful visit from the mirror tent of magical dreams and song!

Spiegeltents ('spiegel' is German for mirror glass) are large, hand-crafted tents used as travelling dance halls, bars and salons in Europe since the early 20th century.

Much like the romantic troubadours and colourful gypsies of another era, Spiegeltents travel to festivals around the world and provide a glamorous platform for world class cabaret performers and musicians.

Sitting on the forecourt of Melbourne’s Arts Centre precinct on St Kilda Road, Melbourne, the Spiegeltent this year sparkled with its funfair presence of red velvet and art nouveau brocade soaked with the songs and laughter of the past.

Featuring cabaret, a weekend jazz series and the Club Spiegel night club plus many established and emerging Australian entertainers, it did not disappoint.

The Spiegeltent is a must see annual event in any Victorian’s festive calendar of fun, so be sure to look out for it next October to mid December.
