Fire Services Commissioner - new website

The new Fire Services Commissioner website ensures the public can easily access legislation and information regarding the newly established role of Fire Services Commissioner, and enables the Victorian fire services to access standard operating procedures, guidelines and procedures that must be published by the Commissioner, as directed by the Fire Services Commissioner Act 2010.

The website positions the new Fire Services Commissioner as independent of government departments, also delivering on legislative requirements outlined by the Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission Final Report, covered under s14b of the Fire Services Commissioner Act 2010.

The First Car List

Contrary to popular belief you do not have to spend a lot of money to make sure your first car is safe.

However, with so many cars to buy how do you know which car will best protect you in a crash?

The First Car List has been prepared especially for young people who are thinking about buying their first car.

The list includes small, medium and large sized used cars with either four or five star safety ratings ranging in cost from as little as $2,000 up to around $14,000.

Victoria's Firewood Strategy for Public Land

Victoria's Firewood Strategy for Public Land will ensure the sustainable supply of firewood from public land for households in regional Victoria. The changes will be phased in from autumn 2011, with the new system fully in place for the autumn 2012 firewood collection season.

The firewood strategy:

  • creates opportunities for community firewood suppliers to supply firewood from State forest to Victorian communities;
  • sets out a simple system for making firewood on public land available to Victorian households; and
  • balances the needs of the environment with the needs of the community.

Healthy lunch boxes for children

Plant fruit and veg in your lunchboxHealthy lunches and snacks are important for children and help with concentration and learning. Healthy eating changes are not always easy to make. Try to set a good example with your own lunches. Encourage children to be involved in their own lunch preparation, and their choices about foods to include. Praise your child when they choose healthy foods for the lunch box.

There are limited times for children to eat during the day, especially at school. Children may prefer to play with friends instead of eating. Encourage your child to sit and eat before heading out to play, or talk to your school about making sure all children get a chance to eat enough before play starts.

Six items to put in a lunch box:

  • Vegetables
  • Fresh fruit
  • Dairy food – cheese or yoghurt
  • Protein food – slice of lean meat, hard-boiled egg or beans
  • Starchy food – bread, roll, pita or flat bread, fruit bread or crackers
  • Water.
