Melbourne
Flooding along the banks of the Yarra was a major concern in the early years of European settlement.
The first major flood after the settlement was on Christmas Day in 1839 when, according to one observer, the water level rose by 8 feet 6 inches (2.57 metres).
Major floods occurred in 1842, twice in 1844 and, the most devastating of all, in 1849, when the water at Dight's Falls rose by 37 feet (11.3m).
