"Your Victoria.
Strong Families, Vibrant Communities, Healthy Environment"
The Royal Melbourne Show (the Show) is Victoria's largest and longest running annual public event, attracting over 490,000 visitors - mainly families with young children and adults. For departments and agencies, this event is an opportunity to connect and engage with a large number of Victorians in an atmosphere that is positive, light and entertaining.
The exhibition will be open daily from 10am-6pm throughout the entire show.
Showtime 2011: Victorian State Schools Spectacular will be staged at the Hisense Arena, Melbourne Park on Sunday 18 September 2011 over two performances - a matinee at 11.00am and an evening performance at 5.00pm.
Tickets are now on sale through Ticketek. For more information, see: Performance Dates and Details
4-10 September 2011
Child Protection Week is an annual event promoting the belief that it is everyone's responsibility to keep children safe - physically and emotionally. Child Protection Week is coordinated nationally by the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) and, in Victoria, by the Department of Human Services.
This year's theme is: Play Your Part to keep children safe.
The new Living Victoria Water Rebate Program gives Victorian households and small businesses the opportunity to save water and money when purchasing eligible water-efficient products.
All Victorian domestic households, including those that are self-supplied (not connected to a reticulated water supply) can obtain rebates on eligible products purchased and installed between 1 July 2011 and 30 June 2013.
Households can now obtain a rebate on a 5 star water (WELS), 4 star energy washing machine and a pool cover with a roller or reel. Other eligible products include rainwater tanks connected to a toilet and/or laundry, water efficient showerheads, upgrading to eligible dual flush toilets, garden products and systems for reusing household waste water.
Rebates on goods purchased prior to 30 June 2011 as part of the Water Smart Gardens and Homes Rebate Scheme can still be claimed up until 30 September 2011.
The Victorian War Heritage Inventory is a new online database containing information relating to Victoria's war history including war memorials, avenues of honour, memorial buildings, former defence sites and places of commemoration. It does not currently list moveable heritage objects such as honour rolls or museum collections.
The Inventory was developed as a joint project between the Veterans Unit and Heritage Victoria.
Search the Victorian War Heritage Inventory to find out more about places related to Victoria's war history.
16 regional councils had requested alternative public holiday arrangements for 2011, in lieu of Melbourne Cup Day, to celebrate 16 local race days and agricultural shows.
The amendment to the Public Holidays Act 1993, instigated by the Coalition Government, now provides regional councils the opportunity to request either one whole day or two half-day public holidays as a substitute for Melbourne Cup Day. These arrangements can apply to the whole, or part, of a municipality.
Melbourne Cup Day continues to be the automatic default public holiday, which means all Victorians can continue to enjoy the same number of public holidays each year, regardless of whether they live in regional Victoria or in metropolitan Melbourne.
Information about all Victorian public holidays and regional public holiday arrangements is available online at business.vic.gov.au/publicholidays or by calling 13 22 15.
Victorian seniors will be able to enjoy more than 1,000 events throughout October as part of the 2011 Victorian Seniors Festival.
The festival, now in its 29th year, celebrates and acknowledges older Victorians and includes special events for rural towns affected by floods.
The festival program is available at all Coles stores, libraries, council offices, neighbourhood houses and various community and seniors' organisations.
Further information is available from www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au or by calling Seniors Information Victoria on 1300 135 090.
The Minister for Environment and Climate Change has announced changes to arrangements for firewood collection on public land, beginning 1 September 2011.
The changes will make firewood collection from public land more affordable and straightforward for the community, and will safeguard the environmental sustainability of our forests and parks.
From 1 September 2011, you no longer require a permit to collect firewood for personal use from State forests (and those parks where collection is allowed).
Applications are now open for the Coastcare Victoria Community Grants Program. Applications close 30 September 2011.
Victorian communities and volunteers play a key role in the ongoing protection and conservation of our coastal landscapes. To support these community groups and their activities, funding is provided through the Coastcare Victoria Community Grants Program. Grants of between $2,000 and $25,000 will be provided to successful applicants for works on conservation projects along the Victorian coast.
The Grants Program is a partnership between Australian Government's Caring for our Country program and the Department of Sustainability and Environment's Coastcare program. The aim of the Grants Program is to protect the ecological integrity of Victoria's coastal ecosytems by funding on-ground conservation works undertaken by volunteer groups.
