Road rules exist to help keep our roads safer for all road users. Penalties apply to those caught breaking the rules. Penalties may include monetary fines, loss of your learner permit or licence, or you may be taken to court. Many offences also attract demerit points. In serious cases prison sentences may be imposed.

On 9 November 2009, a number of Victoria's road safety rules changed. The changes help improve road safety and make the road rules more consistent across Australia. Contains a summary of some of the road rules.

Victoria Police is authorised to impound or immobilise vehicles for 48 hours when members reasonably believe that an individual has committed a hoon related offence.
