Road rules exist to help keep our roads safer for all road users. Penalties apply to those caught breaking the rules. Penalties may include monetary fines, loss of your learner permit or licence, or you may be taken to court. Many offences also attract demerit points. In serious cases prison sentences may be imposed.
The following topics contain a summary of some of the road rules. VicRoads advises there are changes to the Road Rules, effective as of 30 June 2012.
Victoria Police is authorised to impound or immobilise a vehicle for 30 days immediately at the roadside when an individual commits a high risk, or dangerous driving or a hoon offence.
