Aboriginal procurement series

In October 2017,  the Victorian Aboriginal Economic Board and the Premier’s Jobs and Investment Panel joined up to host the final event in the Board’s procurement event series.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Natalie Hutchins attended the event, along with Aboriginal business owners and operators and representatives from some of the largest corporate businesses in the state.

The event was held during National Indigenous Business month and was the final of a series of procurement events held throughout September 2017 to discuss and promote the growth of Aboriginal businesses in Victoria. There are more than 900 Aboriginal owner-managers in our state that are continuing to prosper.

Held at the Investment Centre Victoria, the event promoted the Victorian Government’s 1% Aboriginal procurement target and conveyed the benefits of the private sector matching or exceeding the target. It was attended by some of Victoria’s most influential businesses and provided strategic advice to the Premier on how to drive Aboriginal business development and ethical purchasing practices.

The night saw a significant turning point for the Board where the Victorian Government and the corporate sector reconsidered their purchasing power and the evidence base underpinning it, and made genuine connections with Aboriginal businesspeople on the night.

The procurement event series was introduced by the Board to foster practical strategies, relationships and understanding between Victorian Government agencies, Victoria's major corporate businesses and the Aboriginal business sector. This then helps Aboriginal businesses to better access procurement opportunities and to overcome the barriers that were identified in the procurement event series.

Over the last 12 months, the Board has also travelled to and engaged with regional business communities and Aboriginal communities in Geelong, Shepparton and Mildura to encourage improvements in Aboriginal training, education, employment and procurement.
