Born in Melbourne, Don Abell lived and grew up in Essendon. He studied at Essendon High School and the University of Melbourne. He has worked in the accountancy profession for over 30 years and is a retired partner at KPMG. He currently serves as chief financial officer at the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership Ltd.
Business success allowed Don to indulge his keen interest in horse racing. While at KPMG he was responsible for the Thoroughbred Racing and Breeding practice within the firm and serviced many of the largest racing and breeding operations in Australia.
In 2000, Don was invited to join the Committee of the Moonee Valley Racing Club. He was appointed treasurer in 2000, vice chairman in 2001, and chairman from 2002 to 2007.
Don is also a former chairman of the Tasmanian Racing Board. On the practical side, Don races several horses with friends, enjoying various levels of success but having a great deal of fun.
