IDAHOBIT Reception 2017
Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria warmly welcomed guests to Government House, and reaffirmed her strong personal support for LGBTI inclusion.
“We welcome all of you who identify as members of the LGBTI community, and we welcome the families, friends and allies who join you in respect for and support of Victoria’s LGBTI Community”.
The Governor also invited Minister for Equality Martin Foley MP and Gender and Sexuality Commissioner Ro Allen to address the guests.
Our nation’s first ever Minister for Equality Martin Foley MP spoke about the Victorian Government’s ongoing commitment and investment toward LGBTI inclusion, and the importance of recognising IDAHOBIT:
“It’s all about building a Victoria that has a place for everyone. A future where the Minister for Equality is not needed- acceptance and equality is a value embedded in all we do”.
Commissioner Allen thanked the Governor for her generosity in welcoming and celebrating LGBTI Victorians, and spoke of the ongoing need to support our LGBTI communities in Victoria and across the world.
“I believe tonight’s IDAHOBIT event is a sign of hope…it will always be the Victorian Governor who did it first for the rest of Australia. And we will always, we will always be a part of that history.”
IDAHOBIT is acknowledged annually on 17 May in 130 countries, including in 37 countries where homosexual acts are illegal. It marks the anniversary of the day in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed the classification of homosexuality as a mental disorder. IDAHOBIT draws global attention to the violence and discrimination that LGBTI people continue to experience.
The iconic Government House ballroom was filled to capacity.
