The Centre for Workforce Excellence

The Centre for Workforce Excellence was announced in Victoria’s Plan for Change and will support the government’s response to recommendation 212 of the Royal Commission into Family Violence.

The Centre for Workforce Excellence will have a key role in:

  • leading initiatives designed to boost the capabilities of a broad range of workforces involved in primary prevention and family violence
  • supporting interdisciplinary learning about family violence across the social services, health, education and justice workforces
  • researching and identifying core prevention and response skills and capabilities across workforces, promoting best practice and contributing to the development of formal workforce training

The Centre for Workforce Excellence has a priority focus on the delivery of the 10-Year Industry Plan for prevention and response in Victoria to address recommendation 207 of the Royal Commission into Family Violence. The plan will form 'a central plank in the program of change'.

Industry Plan informed by Victoria’s first workforce census

Victoria’s first census for workforces which intersect with family violence was completed in 2017 by KPMG under the stewardship of the Centre for Workforce Excellence.

The census included two parts – an employee survey and an employer data request for selected workforces. Topics in scope included role, demographics, remuneration, qualifications and experience, career pathways, supervision, and health and wellbeing. It reached a broad range of workforces and received 11,265 responses.

The results of the census have informed the development of the 10-Year Industry Plan: Building From Strength. This is now the guiding strategy to strengthen the specialist family violence and primary prevention sectors and build capability across the range of workforces that intersect with family violence.

Data from the census which has been used in the plan provide insights into the experiences and challenges of the workforce. Key findings of the census are contained in the workforce census report:
