Respect Victoria

On the second anniversary of the Royal Commission into Family Violence, the government today announced a new organisation, Respect Victoria.

Respect Victoria will have a dedicated focus on the prevention of family violence and all forms of violence against women and it will work for a future where all Victorians experience equality and respect where they live, work, learn, and play.

Family violence and violence against women are pervasive across Victoria. They shatter lives, families and communities.

This violence is preventable if we address the inequality and discrimination that drive it. Stopping violence before it starts is the only way to reduce its prevalence and the demand for response services.

Respect Victoria will do this by changing the attitudes and culture that cause violent behaviour. It will continue the Victorian Government’s work to address gender inequality as a root cause of this violence.

Establishing Respect Victoria fulfils Recommendation 188 of the Royal Commission into Family Violence. It is central to the government’s primary prevention strategy, Free from violence.

The organisation will address two pillars of Free from violence: research and evaluation, and community engagement.
