Privacy policy - The Orange Door

The Orange Door needs relevant information about its clients to help it to do its job. The more relevant information that is available, the better service The Orange Door can provide.

Without information, The Orange Door may not be able to work with you, your family or children to identify issues, needs and make sure you get the right support.

In dealing with your information, The Orange Door is committed to safeguarding privacy.

The Orange Door will only collect, use and disclose your confidential information (including personal and health information):

•      in line with applicable laws, including the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic), the Health Records Act 2001 (Vic), and the Family Violence Protection Act 2008 (Vic); and

•      if the information is relevant to the services we provide.

In addition to collecting information directly from you, The Orange Door might also need to find out more from other sources. For example, The Orange Door might seek information about a perpetrator of family violence from the police, to help identify if there is an immediate risk to someone.

Sometimes, an Orange Door worker will need to talk to another team member about a client. This will be done where necessary to ensure different kinds of expertise are available and to improve the service provided. This will mean that clients won't have to re-tell their story.

Where a client has agreed to be referred from The Orange Door to a community service, The Orange Door will share relevant information to help that service do its job.

Information will be stored on a secure IT system, which is only accessible to The Orange Door team. We will take all reasonable precautions to ensure the security of confidential information from loss, misuse, unauthorised access, modifications or disclosures.

You may ask us to deal with your information in a particular way, and we will do what we can to meet your request.

There are circumstances in which The Orange Door will be legally required to use your information in a particular way - for example, where a person’s safety is at risk.

You have the right to seek access to your information held by The Orange Door. This can be provided to you in most circumstances, unless release of the information would impact on someone else’s privacy or safety.

If you identify information that is incorrect or you do not agree with, you also have the right to request that it be amended.

We encourage you to contact the Manager at The Orange Door in your area should you have any privacy queries or complaints or to email privacy@familysafety.vic.gov.au.

If you are not satisfied with the response to your privacy query or complaint by The Orange Door, you may also make a privacy complaint to:

•      the Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner in relation to a complaint relating to personal or sensitive information (PO Box 24274 Melbourne VIC 3001 or by email to privacy@cpdp.vic.gov.au); and/or

•      the Health Complaints Commissioner in relation to a complaint relating to health information (online at https://hcc.vic.gov.au/make-complaint).
