The Big Housing Build will kick-start careers in the building industry and help us get growing again. Over the next 4 years, new jobs will be created right across metropolitan and regional Victoria.
Figure: Jobs created per year
Four years of job creation across Victoria:
- 2,000 jobs in 2020 - 2021
- 11,480 jobs in 2021- 2022
- 18,800 jobs in 2022 - 2023
- 11,600 jobs in 2023 -2024.
As part of the new jobs there will be:
A boost for apprenticeships
Across the duration of the building program, apprentices, trainees and cadets will comprise up to 10 per cent of all the hours worked on large projects.
Support for Aboriginal Victorians and diverse workers
Under a range of employment strategies already in place, hundreds of the new jobs created will be taken up by Aboriginal Victorians, as well as by social housing tenants, people who are or have experienced homelessness, and migrants and refugees.
Support for women
We’ll have a gender equity plan to get more women into construction.
600 new jobs in maintenance and upgrades
Around 600 additional new jobs will be created by the $498 million worth of new maintenance and refurbishment work already underway.
Impact of COVID-19 pandemic
Forecasting construction market conditions and private demand for housing is more complicated in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Projected construction commencements and jobs created by the Big Housing Build are estimates based on the current outlook, and will be regularly reviewed and updated.
