Meet Ian, TAFE nursing teacher
Being surrounded by a great team, having the opportunity to influence curriculum and assessment and seeing positive outcomes for students makes work, well, not work.
Ian never imagined a request from a colleague to deliver one infection control unit to Diploma of Nursing students would lead to a whole new career path.
Ian had previously studied for and used his Certificate IV in Training and Assessment to supervise students. It was this qualification and the one-off teaching opportunity that paved the way to an unexpected new career as a nursing teacher. "I was always a little jealous of people who worked doing something they enjoyed. Moving into teaching in TAFE has made me that person; every day I'm working doing something that I enjoy," Ian says.
While both nursing and teaching give Ian a sense of pride and accomplishment, teaching offers Ian the lifestyle he is looking for. "The fact that I can plan my work around my life obligations is great! There is so much more opportunity for a balanced approach," Ian remarks.
Ian is grateful for the unique opportunity he can play in shaping the future of the healthcare industry: "where else can you impact the lives of others in a way that not only is positive for the individual but also has a broader influence on our communities?"
