Taking action on climate change

We recognise more must be done to build resilience and adapt to climate related change. And to manage the impacts of natural disasters.

Climate change brings significant challenges for Victorians. The Climate Change Act 2017 provides Victoria with a world-leading legislative foundation to:

  • manage climate change risks
  • maximise opportunities that arise from decisive action
  • drive our transition to:
    • a climate resilient community
    • an economy with net zero emissions

Statewide efforts include working with industry, the community and local government. As well as developing better data to inform our actions.

Projects and reforms

The Victorian Infrastructure Plan includes 5 projects and reforms under this Environment priority. These are detailed in the Environment sector plan and full edition VIP, available for download together with:

  • Government response - outlines our position and addresses 137 recommendations made by Infrastructure Victoria in its 30-year Infrastructure Strategy
  • Technical report - indicates where projects and reforms meet the plan’s four objectives

Case study

Net zero by 2050

With Net zero by 2050, the Victorian Government has committed to legislating a long-term target for Victoria.

This means that by 2050 Victoria will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible. Any remaining emissions will be offset through carbon capture activities.

This will enable Victoria to contribute to the 2016 Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The agreement aims to keep global warming under a 2° Celsius rise from preindustrial levels.

The Victorian Government will set five yearly interim targets to 2050. To ensure this important and ambitious target is reached.

The Victorian Infrastructure Plan identifies 3 other priorities within the Environment sector. They are:

Protecting Victoria’s biodiversity

Managing our parks

Improving resource recovery and waste management
