LGBTI Taskforce meeting 11 outcomes

Minutes for LGBTI Taskforce meeting 11, held on 28 June 2018

The LGBTI Taskforce was established in 2015 to provide advice to the Victorian Government on equality and inclusion for LGBTI communities. The Taskforce’s second term began in December 2017.

The second LGBTI Taskforce held its third meeting on 28 June 2018.

New LGBTI funding

At the meeting, co-chair Minister for Equality, Martin Foley MP, spoke about two initiatives contained in the 2018-19 State budget – a $2 million investment over four years for a new Pride Events and Festivals Fund, and a $3.4 million investment to expand the Victorian health system’s capacity to support trans and gender diverse people.

The Minister also noted the first intake of the LGBTI Leadership Program.

LGBTI equality strategy

Co-chair Brenda Appleton continued a discussion from the previous meeting about development of a longer term strategic vision for LGBTI equality in Victoria. The discussion focussed on the process for developing a strategy, including:

  • enabling the Taskforce to bring a particular focus on the role of government and the role of communities in developing and implementing a longer term strategy
  • the process for genuine and meaningful community engagement and input into the development of strategy and
  • preparation of a background paper as a first step for community engagement

LGBTI working group updates

The Taskforce was also provided with general updates from the Department of Premier and Cabinet, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice Regulation on various matters, including on:

  • key 2017-18 and 2018-19 budget initiatives and
  • recent work of the Health and Human Services and Justice Working Groups

The taskforce was also updated on the development of a LGBTI family violence campaign.

The LGBTI Taskforce will meet again on 13 September 2018.
