LGBTI Taskforce meetings 5 and 6 outcomes

Minutes for LGBTI Taskforce meetings 5 and 6, held in September and December 2016.

This Communiqué relates to the fifth and sixth meetings of the LGBTI Taskforce.

At its fifth meeting, held on 8 September 2016, the Taskforce discussed:

  • the formation of an LGBTI Family Violence Working Group, to provide advice to government and periodic updates to the Taskforce on LGBTI family violence
  • development of guidelines for the LGBTI Community Grants Program
  • formation of the Pride Centre Board and request for tenders to develop a Pride Centre business case

At its sixth meeting, held on 14 December 2016, Taskforce members welcomed the Government’s decision that the Safe Schools Program would be delivered by the Department of Education and Training from the commencement of the new school year. The Taskforce noted this would ensure the Program was provided with increased support and commitment and would align the delivery of the Program with other whole-of-government education programs for schools.

The Taskforce also:

  • expressed disappointment that the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Amendment Bill 2016 and the Equal Opportunity Amendment (Religious Exceptions) Bill 2016 were defeated in the Legislative Council
  • proposed work to promote LGBTI inclusion under government contracts
  • heard a presentation about a service framework for LGBTI family violence
  • received an update on the Pride Centre, including the anticipated selection of a site in early 2017

Working group updates

Taskforce members welcomed and discussed the following projects from the Health and Human Services and Justice Working Groups:

  • launch of the State Disability Plan 2017-20 on 10 December 2016, which includes actions to address the needs of LGBTI people with disabilities
  • imminent release of a request for quote for a project that will highlight preferred models for health services to better support trans and gender diverse Victorians
  • development of tools and resources to promote LGBTI inclusive planning and practice within community health services
  • progression of work on legislation to implement the Government’s pre-election commitment to amend Victorian laws that unfairly discriminate against LGBTI Victorians
