Working together with people with disability, families and staff

Since 2016, the Victorian Government has been working closely with Victorians with disability, their families and carers, service providers and disability workers across the state to shape the future delivery of disability services.

Together we are co-designing a system that will ensure high quality, individualised and safe support, enabled by trusted workers, with ongoing communication and support for advocacy.

Interviews and small workshops have been conducted as part of a co-design approach to understand residents’ lived experiences and their hopes for the NDIS, with a focus on quality of care, safety and choice.

Hearing people’s personal stories and understanding their different needs is helping us move closer to bridging the gap between plans and everyday experience.

This consultation goes beyond talking and listening. It’s about understanding what people value most about their services and the opportunities they hope the NDIS can provide. We see it as collaboration – a form of community partnership that will influence the way the scheme is implemented in Victoria.

The information gathered during these discussions shaped the strict conditions placed on the transfer of services, and both the EOI and tender process evaluation criteria, designed to measure and test the quality of potential service providers. It also shaped the transfer roadmap, which details how the transfer will happen including what to expect when the new providers are announced, and over the months leading to the transfer.

Our commitment to genuine collaboration and partnership will continue through the transfer of accommodation and respite services and beyond.

In this phase of co-design, we worked collaboratively with people with disability, families and staff to understand what they expect from government and new providers during the transfer. The resulting Transfer Experience Framework, or roadmap, was then tested and finalised through further consultation with people with disability, families and staff.
