Our projects

Considering how people behave in everyday life

Since 2016, the Behavioural Insights Unit has been supporting the Victorian Government’s commitment to make government more citizen-centric. This work has covered many different areas of the public purpose sector.

Work underway

  • Child Protection Reporter Support. We are working with the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure children in need of support can receive the most appropriate service at the right time.
  • Vocational Education. We are collaborating with the Department of Education and Training as well as TAFEs to help students persist in their vocational studies.
  • Energy Demand Management.We are working with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to support vulnerable consumers to get the best energy deal from their retailer and to reduce energy consumption during peak demand periods.
  • Patient Communication. We are working with Safer Care Victoria and the Department of Health and Human Services to develop a consistent tool for communication with patients of specialist clinics to support the efficient use of scarce hospital resources.
  • Organ Donation. We are working with the Department of Health and Human Services, VicRoads and DonateLife Victoria to increase the number of Victorians registered as organ donors.
  • Emergency Department Diversion. We have partnered with the Department of Health and Human Services to divert patients with non-urgent healthcare needs from the emergency department and into more appropriate service providers.
  • Birth Registrations. We are supporting the Department of Justice and Regulation to increase the number of births registered online.

Completed work

  • Family Violence Information Sharing. We worked with the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Justice and Regulation, the Magistrates Court of Victoria and Berry Street to enhance information sharing by frontline family violence workers.   • Land Tax Payments. We worked with the State Revenue Office to increase the proportion of Victorians paying land tax via preferred payment methods. Read the case study about encouraging the use of preferred payment channels
  • Immunisation. We supported the Department of Health and Human Services to increase immunisation rates in Victoria. Read the case study about increasing the human papillomavirus vaccination rate
  • Methadone Permit Compliance. We worked with the Department of Health and Human Services to improve doctors’ compliance with methadone permit requirements.
  • Public Transport Interchanging. We collaborated with Public Transport Victoria to assist passengers to navigate changing train lines.
  • Healthy Homes: Energy Efficiency Retrofit. We worked with Sustainability Victoria to measure the impact of home energy efficiency upgrades on the health and wellbeing outcomes of low-income households.
  • Transition Queries to the Consumer Affairs Victoria website. We collaborated with Consumer Affairs Victoria to redirect simple phone line queries to the Consumer Affairs Victoria website.
