Venues applying for temporary limited liquor licences to broadcast major sporting events in November and December 2022 will have their application fees refunded by the Victorian Government.

Temporary limited liquor licences are often used by bars, hotels, restaurants and cafes to extend the usual trading hours on their permanent liquor licences for one-off events.

Receiving your refund

Venues can apply for a temporary limited liquor licence onlineExternal Link through Liquor Control Victoria.

You should complete your application form in full. Make sure to include the name of the major sporting event you want to broadcast in the 'Additional information' section of the application form.

You will pay the fee for this application, but Liquor Control Victoria will refund you. You do not need to do anything to receive your refund, we will do this as part of our assessment of your application. Please note: you must make sure to advise us that your application is for a major sporting event.

Applications to trade past 1am will still be subject to a strict assessment.

You are encouraged to apply as early as possible to allow enough time for Liquor Control Victoria to process and assess the application.

Venues broadcasting the FIFA World Cup 2022

A simplified application process is available for venues planning to broadcast FIFA World Cup 2022.

Venues can now apply for a single temporary limited liquor licence for the duration of the event from 21 November to 19 December 2022. Separate licences for each match are not required.

This licence will only apply during the live broadcast of FIFA World Cup 2022 matches, with some leeway before and after the event.

On the application form:

  • provide your permanent licence number
  • select 'Other' for 'Event type'
  • enter '21 November' as the first event date
  • enter '19 December' as the last event date
  • select the days and hours you want to extend the existing trading hours on your permanent licence
  • note the event is for the 'FIFA World Cup 2022' in 'Additional information'
  • attach your venue management plan. This is because trading will extend beyond 1am.

We encourage venues planning to broadcast FIFA World Cup 2022 matches to make your application as soon as possible to allow for processing ahead of the first match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on 21 November 2022.
