The Hon Fiona Richardson MP

Fiona Richardson

Message from CEO Office of Prevention and Women’s Equality

I would like to acknowledge the sadness expressed by so many following the passing of Victoria's first Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence and the Minister for Women, Fiona Richardson.

Minister Richardson dedicated her life to protecting women and children and will be remembered as one of Victoria's greatest advocates for ending family violence, achieving gender equality and promoting women’s leadership.

Minister Richardson was a deeply committed and inspirational leader. A fearless champion of victim survivors, she touched the lives of many people through her work.

As anti-family violence campaigner, Rosie Batty aptly said “Ms Richardson was an inspiration and her death should be a catalyst, bringing together politicians and the wider community to complete the work she began”.

The Minister led the critical foundations for an ongoing and dedicated focus on achieving gender equality through the release of Safe and Strong, Victoria’s first gender equality strategy.

More recently she delivered Free from violence: Victoria’s strategy to prevent family violence and all forms of violence against women.

Minister Richardson’s determination to deliver lasting and meaningful change has shaped Victoria. Improving the safety of all Victorian women and children was her mission, not her job — and her legacy will live on through our work.

My deepest condolences go out to Minister Richardson’s family, friends and colleagues at this most difficult time.
