Women's Board Leadership Program

Take the next step in your board career.

This scholarship program provides governance training and mentoring to help  women seeking to advance their board careers.

The program is open to women in Victoria with experience on a community or government board or committee of management.

Applications open on 21 May 2018 and close on 22 June 2018.

The program

You will have access to a range of governance courses from the Australian Institute of Company Directors and Leadership Victoria. The program includes coaching, mentoring, and coursework that will develop your governance knowledge and leadership skills.

The program has four streams of entry; three for applicants with 1 to 3 years’ experience serving on a board or committee of management and one for applicants with more than 3 years’ experience.

Strengthening board skills

Learn about the duties and responsibilities of boards and directors.

This program is for women starting out in their board careers (with 1 to 3 years’ experience serving on a board or committee of management) who want to learn about the duties and responsibilities of boards and directors.

This program includes:

  • Foundations of Directorship™ (delivered by the Australian Institute of Company Directors)
    This program will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the main components of directorship – governance, strategy, risk and finance. You will establish a new director-oriented outlook that will prepare you for a successful board director career. The program is delivered in a mixed-gender environment, with opportunity to engage with participants from across business, government and not-for-profit sectors.
    Time commitment: 3 full days and approximately 20-30 hours of pre-program reading.
  • Boardroom Effectiveness for Women (delivered by the Australian Institute of Company Directors)
    This course will provide you with knowledge of the competencies of effective leaders. It will examine the role of female directors as leaders and consider ways in which women can enhance their leadership skills to improve board and organisational outcomes and performance.
    Time commitment: A 60-minute pre-course webinar, followed by a one-day session and post-course reading components.
  • One year membership with the Australian Institute of Company Directors
  • Networking with other participants

Strengthening board skills for culturally diverse women

Learn about the duties and responsibilities of boards and directors.

This program is for women who were born overseas, have a parent who was born overseas and/or their first language is not English, who are starting out in their board careers (with 1 to 3 years’ experience serving on a board or committee of management).

This program includes:

  • Board Leadership for Culturally Diverse Women (delivered by Leadership Victoria)
    Explore excellence in board governance in a culturally relevant and peer-supported context. This foundational board leadership program provides an overview of the main components of directorship – governance, strategy, risk and finance.
    Participants formpeer networks and connect with female leaders from culturally diverse backgrounds.
    Time commitment: 4 days (9:30am to 2:30pm) spread over 3 months.
  • Self-advocacy and Presenting for Success in Interviews (delivered by Leadership Victoria)
    A practical skills-based workshop to develop self-awareness, confidence and skills in communication, self-advocacy and interview techniques to present positively and with confidence during board recruitment interviews.
    Time commitment: 1 day workshop plus pre-reading
  • Mentoring (delivered by Leadership Victoria)
    You will be matched with an experienced board member who will support you with your board leadership development in an 8 month mentoring program.
    Time commitment: Attendance at 2 hour workshops at the beginning, middle and end of the 8 month mentoring program, in addition to a self-directed component with participants expected to arrange regular meetings with their mentor (for example, monthly one-hour meetings) during the mentoring program period.
  • Networking with other participants

Strengthening board skills for Aboriginal women

Learn about the duties and responsibilities of boards and directors.

This program is for Aboriginal women starting out in their board careers (with 1 to 3 years’ experience serving on a board or committee of management).

This program includes:

  • Board Leadership for Aboriginal Women (delivered by Leadership Victoria)
    Explore excellence in board governance in a culturally relevant and peer-supported context. This foundational board leadership program will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the main components of directorship – governance, strategy, risk and finance.
  • Forming a peer network and connecting with Aboriginal women leaders, this program will develop your board leadership skills and confidence so you can continue to progress your board leadership career.
    Time commitment: 3 days
  • Self-advocacy and Presenting for Success in Interviews (delivered by Leadership Victoria)
    A practical skills-based workshop to develop your self-awareness, confidence and skills in communication, self-advocacy and interview techniques to present positively and with confidence during board recruitment interviews.
    Time commitment: 1 day workshop plus pre-reading
  • Mentoring (delivered by Leadership Victoria)
    You will be matched with an experienced board director who will support you with your board leadership development in an 8 month mentoring program.

Mastering board skills

Take your board performance to the next level.

This program is for women who are experienced board directors (with more than 3 years’ experience serving on a board or committee of management), in particular board chairs and executives such as treasurers and board secretaries.

This program includes:

  • Company Directors Course™ (delivered by the Australian Institute of Company Directors)
    In this course you will gain a greater understanding of the practice of directorship and the mindset of a director as a leader of an organisation, before examining the directors’ duties and legal environment, risk oversight, strategy contribution, financial performance analysis and measuring board effectiveness. Participants may attain the Company Directors Course award, through successfully completing the three assessment tasks.
    Time commitment: 5 days and approximately 40-60 hours of pre-program reading.
  • Director Nexus (delivered by the Australian Institute of Company Directors)
    These small confidential peer group discussions provide a forum where you can seek perspective on a wide range of boardroom issues and take away practical guidance.
    Time commitment: 10 x two hour meetings.
  • One year membership with the Australian Institute of Company Directors
  • Networking with other participants

Eligibility

You are eligible for the Women’s Board Leadership Program if you:

  • identify as a woman
  • live in Victoria
  • have experience on a board or committee of management

If you are currently a board director, you must be serving on a Victorian Government board or a not-for-profit board.

What you need to apply

The time commitment for the Women’s Board Leadership Program will vary depending on your stream of entry. Expect to commit 10 to 20 days for networking, pre-work and face-to-face coursework across the program.

Some sessions are held during business hours, so if you’re employed you should gain your employer’s support.

To complete your online application, prepare:

  • responses to the key selection criteria
  • your resume
  • a letter of support from the Chair of a board that you serve on, or a professional referee who can confirm your board leadership achievements, capability and potential

Assessment process

Applications are assessed by an independent panel of women from business, government and community. This panel provides recommendations to the Minister for Women.

We encourage previously unsuccessful applicants to re-apply.

You will not need to attend an interview.

June to August 2018: Assessment of applications by assessment panel

September 2018: Recommendations provided to Minister for Women

October 2018: Outcomes announced

October 2018: Program commences
