Renting in Victoria

More Victorians are renting than ever. For some, this is by choice – they enjoy the flexibility renting affords. Some rent while they save enough for a home deposit. But for others, renting is their only choice.

Pets and renting

New laws on pets in rental properties start 2 March 2020.

Support and advice for renters

Consumer Affairs Victoria provides advice to help renters to ensure they understand their rights and responsibilities.

The Commissioner for Residential Tenancies listens to renters to understand the key issues they face and acts as a voice for all renters by providing advice to government to inform policy and legislation.

Renters who need additional support such as financial help or emergency accommodation, or public housing can access programs through Housing Victoria.

Property managers

Consumer Affairs Victoria licences estate agents and monitors compliance with their legal obligations.

Changes to renting laws

The Residential Tenancies Amendment Act 2018 was passed in September 2018 and included more than 130 reforms that aim to increase protections for renters, while ensuring rental housing providers can still effectively manage their properties.

While some laws have been implemented, the full suite of reforms will be in place by July 2020.

Consumer Affairs Victoria will oversee implementation of the new laws. For more information, visit Consumer Affairs Victoria.
