A State Memorial Service to honour the life of Allan Moffat OBE will be held at 11:30am on Tuesday, 16 December at Melbourne Town Hall.
Allan Moffat lived a rich and extraordinary life as one of Australia’s most influential and internationally recognised sporting icons.
Born in Canada in 1939, Allan moved to Australia as a 17-year-old and soon embarked on a career that redefined Australian motorsport on the domestic and world stage.
Allan’s achievements include four Australian Touring Car championships and four Bathurst victories which made him a household name, and for decades he was celebrated as the unmistakable face of Ford in Australia.
He became one of the first Australian drivers to excel to elite global endurance racing, winning global motorsport races, including the inaugural round of the World Touring Car Championship at Monza.
As a passionate advocate for the future of the sport and road safety, Allan was a board and honorary life member of the Australian Racing Drivers’ Club, and director of the Australian Institute for Motor Sport Safety.
Allan’s contribution to the sport has been recognised through induction into the V8 Supercars Hall of Fame, Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame, and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. He was also awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), making him the only Australian motorsport figure to ever receive this honour.
After retiring from racing in 1989, Allan remained deeply connected to the sport through Allan Moffat Enterprises, and as a commentator and mentor to younger drivers. He dedicated his later years to advocacy work as a Patron of Dementia Australia, lending his voice to raise awareness and support families affected by the disease.
Allan’s legacy is more than trophies – he inspired countless fans and competitors with his courage, professionalism, and integrity.
