Derryn Hinch lived a rich and memorable life across media and politics, defined by his principles and unwavering commitment to stand up for what he believed was right.
As a young man he moved from New Zealand to Australia to pursue a career in journalism. Working for The Sun, he climbed the ranks to become editor after spending 11 years as foreign correspondent in the United States and Canada.
Derryn most famously made his name on radio, notably with 3AW, where his inimitable style drew listeners to his talkback shows in droves. In 2010, he was inducted into the Australian Commercial Radio Hall of Fame in recognition of his legacy across the airwaves.
In the 1980s, he moved into network television, hosting multiple current affairs programs and becoming one of the country’s most recognisable figures - a true colossus of Australian broadcasting.
Known as the ‘Human Headline’, Derryn was not afraid to share his opinions and be a champion for those he believed had been let down. In particular, he will be remembered for his passionate and uncompromising support of victims of child sexual abuse.
His belief in, and search for, justice culminated in his creation of the Justice Party and his subsequent election to the Australian Senate, where it became his greatest honour to serve as Senator for Victoria from 2016 to 2019.
Derryn was a committed advocate and led the way on legislation to increase protections for children. His party also focused on reforms to the justice system including tightening of bail and parole laws, and the establishment of a sex offenders register.
Derryn's advocacy extended to charity work. He became Chair of Variety Victoria, as well as being an Ambassador and Life Member. He created Variety International's iconic heart-and-hat logo - a symbol that continues to represent hope, compassion and a fair go for children across the country.
Derryn will be remembered as a legendary journalist and broadcaster who used his voice for those who didn’t have one. He had the courage of his convictions and his legacy of advocacy and search for justice will live on.
