Ground Up: The VRU’s local, community-led violence reduction initiative

A new $13 million initiative supporting community organisations in priority-areas to deliver local solutions to reduce violence.

The Violence Reduction Unit’s new $13 million Ground Up initiative will support community organisations to deliver innovative services and supports in priority communities.

Ground Up starts with a simple belief: there is no one-size-fits-all approach to prevention. Every community has its own strengths, experiences and priorities, and those local insights are critical to understanding what support is needed and what will make the biggest difference.

The VRU is working with partners to better understand what is driving violence in priority communities, and to identify opportunities for new, innovative services and supports to reduce violence. The VRU is drawing on the expertise of local communities to develop solutions that will make a difference in reducing violence.

At the heart of Ground Up is a commitment to working differently. Rather than organisations competing for funding, the initiative is designed to bring partners together in local consortia around a shared goal: supporting young people, building on existing strengths and reducing harm before it occurs.

This initiative brings to life the VRU’s public health approach: using data, evidence and community engagement to deliver effective violence reduction initiatives.
