State Memorial Service for Dr Tim Read

A State Memorial Service to honour the life of Dr Tim Read was held on Wednesday, 28 October at Melbourne Town Hall.

Tim was elected to the Victorian Parliament in 2018 and became one of its most respected parliamentarians over his eight years of service to the people of Brunswick and the state.

Before entering Parliament, Tim was a doctor and medical researcher. He began his career as a general practitioner in community health before specialising in sexual health in the public system.

As a respected researcher, Tim contributed to over 60 peer-reviewed medical publications covering topics such as the public health approaches to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and antibiotic-resistance. Tim completed a PhD on HIV epidemiology and vaccine prevention of STIs.

Tim created history in 2018 becoming the first Greens member for Brunswick.

Over the following eight years, he championed action on climate change, contributed significantly to public health, improved sustainable transport, and campaigned for democratic safeguards, integrity reform and stronger protections for renters.

Tim was the only medical doctor in the Victorian Parliament during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tim’s commitment to improving public health outcomes contributed to significant legislative and policy reforms, including pill testing, tobacco licensing, the abolition of public drunkenness offences, and the development of a statewide plan to eliminate congenital syphilis and HIV transmission.

Among his many achievements, Tim played a leading role in allowing gay men to donate blood and legislating a statutory ban on solitary confinement in Victorian prisons.

Tim’s ability to work across the aisle resulted in strong legislative reforms and changing the course of integrity reform in the state.

Tim’s leadership and commitment to integrity and transparency resulted in him being elected the first ever non-government chair of Parliament’s Integrity and Oversight Committee.

In this role, he led an inquiry to strengthen Victoria’s Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC) and anti-corruption laws, which formed the basis for transformative reforms that expanded the powers of IBAC, which passed in the days after his death.

Tim will be remembered as a proud and passionate Green and a principled change maker – who led with sincerity, warmth and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of Victorians and creating a better world.
