Rooming Houses are residential buildings of multiple occupancy where people rent rooms and share common facilities, such as bathrooms and kitchens.
In January 2025, the Commissioner convened a Taskforce comprising representatives from the local area with an interest or regulatory responsibility for rooming houses. The Taskforce initially consisted of representatives from:
- The City of Greater Dandenong
- Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV)
- Peninsula Community Legal Centre (PCLC)
- WAYSS, and,
- The Office of the Commissioner for Residential Tenancies
CAV conducted more than 100 inspections of rooming houses. WAYSS and PCLC engaged with 105 residents across 58 rooming houses. Fire Rescue Victoria joined the Taskforce and shared their experiences with the rooming house inspections they recently conducted.
The report of the Taskforce outlines the work of the Taskforce and the findings about systemic problems in the rooming house sector including suggestions for improvement and reform.
