Independent research from Monash University demonstrates that where intersections have a history of serious crashes, fixed road safety cameras have helped cut casualty crashes at these locations by around 26%.
On highways where fixed road safety cameras are installed, the impact's even greater, with research showing up to a 30% reduction in fatal and serious injury crashes.
Those aren't just numbers.
These are parents making it home for dinner, kids making it to birthday parties safely, and more families getting home without incident.
Whether it is detecting a driver speeding, running a red light, not wearing a seatbelt correctly, or using a portable device while driving, road safety cameras reduce road trauma.
Penalties include fines and demerit points, and every dollar received from road safety cameras goes to the Better Roads Victoria Trust, where it is spent on road restoration, road surface replacement, bridge strengthening, and other road safety infrastructure improvements.
Through the Victorian Road Safety Strategy 2021 to 2030, we are working to eliminate road deaths, reduce injuries, and encourage a safe driving culture.
Reducing road trauma is a shared responsibility.
