Speed is one of the biggest killers on Victoria's roads, with around one third of all crashes involving inappropriate speed.
In a point-to-point or average speed road safety camera setup, two or more cameras are placed at different points along a length of road.
That length of road is then surveyed by a licenced surveyor and a certificate issued in line with road safety legislation.
For point-to-point enforcement, each camera captures a time-stamped image of passing vehicles, recording the number plate and the time the vehicle passed that location.
It may also detect the speed of the passing vehicle like a regular fixed speed road safety camera.
Point-to-point, or P2P road safety cameras always use the shortest drivable distance between the two points to calculate average speed.
They must also be routinely tested and annually certified before they can be used to ensure accuracy and reliability.
With point-to-point road safety cameras, slowing down when you see the camera isn't enough.
Your speed is measured across the whole length of road, and if you speed, you will receive a fine.
The camera system calculates how long it should take a vehicle to travel between points based on the speed limit.
If a vehicle travels in less time than time calculated by the camera system, an average speed offence is created.
If the average speed is higher than the speed limit for that length of road, or if your speed is higher at either point, an incident is captured and flagged for independent assessment.
If an offence has occurred, it is then sent to Victoria Police who may issue an infringement.
These road safety cameras have been shown to significantly reduce crashes causing deaths and serious injuries by effectively targeting speeding behaviour.
