The RTA or the Residential [music] Tenencies Act 1997 [music] is a law that
protects people living in rental homes in Victoria. [music]
The RTA also protects people living in specialist [music] disability accommodation or SDA. [music]
I live in an SDA home. I am an SDA resident. Some people might also [music]
say that I am a renter. Home to me means feeling [music] safe and being able to
relax. Being able to decorate my room, having friends [music] and family over.
Being able to have a pet if I want one.
The owner of an SDA home is called an [music] SDA provider.
You could also say [music] your SDA provider is your landlord.
The RTA requires [music] my SDA provider to make sure I'm treated
[music]
with respect and my home is safe and secure. I feel
[music] safe and secure in my home when my things that are [music] broken are fixed.
People only come into my home if I [music] say it is okay
or if they [music] have given me a valid notice of entry
and introduced [music] themselves when they arrive. Any feedback or complaints I have about my home are taken [music] seriously.
I am given information about anything that might [music] change in my home.
Rules that an SDA provider must follow.
We are the Department [music] of Family, Fairness, and Housing. We own SDA homes and are an [music] SDA provider.
The RTA has rules that your SDA provider must do like treat you with dignity, respect, and uphold your rights. Make
sure your home is safe and [music] secure and wellmaintained.
Complete repairs with minimal disruption and in a timely manner. Install fixtures [music] required to assist you with your
daily living and provide you with rental information in a way that you can understand and also [music] let you know
through a letter or phone call if we are going to enter your home.
What you can do if your SDA provider doesn't follow the RTA rules. When [music] my SDA provider does not follow
the RTA [music] rules, I feel like I have not been heard,
respected, and that my [music] privacy has been ignored.
You have the [music] right to complain if you are not happy with your [music] SDA.
You can complain about your home. who you live with, lease conditions like how [music] much rent you pay, any services
you get from your SDA provider. There are laws that SDA residents must [music] follow. As an SDA resident, I must do
things like pay my rent on [music] time, treat my housemates and workers
at my home with respect, [music] take care of the property and do not damage it.
Tell the SDA provider where my home needs to be repaired.
If you need help to follow any of these rules, you can ask your SDA provider for help. Contact us by [music] calling
