Meet Ashley Beeby

Hi, my name is Ashley Beeby and I'm a heavy vehicle diesel mechanic here at Daunia mine in central Queensland.

Here at Daunia mine in the field maintenance team I get to work in the workshop on equipment and I also get the opportunity to work in the pit where the equipment is digging coal. Before I started VET, I didn't actually know anything about the automotive trade and I didn't know anything about the options that VET provided as a subject type.

I attended my week of work experience and accidentally found out that I really enjoyed learning about engines and being a mechanic. There is much potential here in big industries and small businesses to really thrive in these trades. There are many people who default to university after school because they're not sure what they want to do. And when it comes to a qualification, regardless of whether it's through university or through a trade, that knowledge comes with time and experience.

By joining the workforce earlier when you're not sure what you want to do with the rest of your life, which is entirely normal, you get the opportunity to learn so much more about the value of time and energy.
