Honours and awards
Member of the Order of Australia for his service to community through executive roles with a range of arts, multicultural, charitable, media and local government organisations, and as an advocate for cultural diversity and harmony.
About
Mike Zafiropoulos has had more than 35 years' involvement in community affairs in a wide range of fields, covering the arts, sport, welfare, local government and philanthropy.
Many of his activities embrace a variety of ethnic communities, as well as the wider community, including founding Festival of All Nations, now Multicultural Arts Victoria; being mayor of Fitzroy and being a member of the Immigration Museum advisory committee.
Prior to becoming radio manager in 1995 and then general manager of SBS Melbourne in 1998, he worked at the Department of Immigration for 10 years, as director of ethnic affairs and later state manager of corporate operations.
He is acutely aware of the significant benefits we can derive as a society by nurturing and promoting cultural diversity. He has pursued this cause in a sensible and constructive way, advocating that Australian cultural diversity, if properly managed, would enhance rather than inhibit social cohesion.
