Two protective service officers (PSOs)

PSOs on trains

From April 2026, PSOs will patrol on trains, as well as platforms, starting earlier and patrolling longer where needed.

Staying safe on public transport

We’re using data and intelligence to deploy protective services officers (PSOs) at peak times and places where they’ll make the most difference.

Community safety remains our top priority, with this change about putting PSOs where and when they are needed most.

This approach reflects modern, evidence-led policing and ensures Victoria Police resources are used in the most effective way.

Victoria Police will closely monitor this change and adjust if needed, to ensure the new approach delivers the intended improvements.

Which trains are PSOs on?

Victoria has more than 1,200 PSOs.

PSOs patrol metro and V/Line train stations, trains, trams and major bus interchanges, every day and night, to help keep us safe. They also patrol the areas surrounding these transport sites.

PSOs will continue to patrol, respond and engage with communities across the day and night, with staffing patterns aligned to local needs.

A full list of patrolled trains and stations is available on the Victoria Police website.
