The Safer Motorcycling Grants Program funds new and innovative projects aimed at improving motorcycle safety in the short and long term.
Fourteen organisations have received grants as part of the $4 million program to deliver a holistic range of projects across three investment categories: technology and intelligent transport solutions (ITS); education and research; and policy and law.
This first-of-its-kind grants program is funded by the Motorcycle Safety Levy.
The Motorcycle Safety Levy invests in targeted safety initiatives with more than $100 million spent since its introduction in 2002.
Motorcyclists are overrepresented in road trauma in Victoria.
Saving motorcycle riders’ lives and preventing serious injuries remains a key road safety challenge. While motorcycle riding continues to grow in popularity, we know motorcyclists are more vulnerable to injury than other motorists.
Successful applicants
Projects receiving funding will:
- educate and empower riders to buy high safety rated protective gear and equipment
- research into rider behaviour and vehicle design
- develop cutting-edge tools and systems to ensure motorcycle infrastructure investment is targeting the right solution in the highest risk locations to maximise safety
- deliver new rider and driver training and education programs and exploring innovative technology to provide a real-time skills feedback system for riders.

Projects not eligible
Infrastructure (capital) projects such as barrier installation, intersection upgrades, traffic calming measures and road improvements, are not eligible under this grant program.
Infrastructure-related project proposals that do not directly impact on the Victorian road network may be considered (for example, data analysis, literature reviews, or trials of innovative treatments where the trial is not conducted on the Victorian road network).
