Details
Antwerp Primary School is believed to have opened in 1891.
Previous names might have included Tarranyurk North, Antwerp West and Antwerp South. The school appears to have been named Antwerp by about 1903.
The publication Vision and Realisation claimed that the school educated indigenous and non-indigenous students from 1904, after the closure of the nearby Ebenezer Aboriginal School on 31 December 1903.
Evidence presented at the Yoorrook Justice commission states that, in 1902 Antwerp State School excluded First Peoples’ children. This is while the Ebenezer Aboriginal School is still operating. However, first Peoples children were again excluded from Antwerp State School in 1909 and 1915, being ‘forbidden’ to attend by the local health officer and parents in 1915 and 1916. This exclusion continued into the 1920s. This is despite Antwerp State School being the designated primary school for Koorie people that remained in the area.
You can view the school's entry in the online version of Vision and Realisation: a centenary history of state education in Victoria.
