The history of Graytown State School

  • 1869

    Graytown opened as a common school in 1869. It was located in a prosperous goldfield settlement.

  • 1870

    By 1870 school attendance reached 100.

  • 1877

    By 1877 the school was being held in a room at the local hotel.

  • 1878

    The school building, first proposed in 1869, was built in 1878.

    The head teacher at the time was John Hamilton.

  • 1887

    In 1887 vandals damages school building with bullets.

  • 1894

    By 1894 attendance had fallen below 20.

  • 1903

    In 1903 the attendance fell to 10.

  • 1906

    A storm damaged the building in 1906.

  • 1910

    The school closed in 1910.
