If you’re living in a retirement village or thinking about joining one, there are still spaces available for the final event in the free Retirement Village Roadshow to find out what Victoria's new retirement village laws mean for you.
Since 1 May 2026, the biggest changes to the retirement villages laws in almost 40 years have taken effect. The new laws give residents stronger protections and clearer rights and responsibilities.
The Retirement Village Roadshow has been travelling across Victoria to help current and prospective residents understand the changes, ask questions and find out where to get advice and support.
The events feature the Commissioner for Retirement Villages Heather Holst and representatives from Consumer Affairs Victoria, VicAssist Retirement Villages and Residents of Retirement Villages Victoria.
At each session, you will:
- learn what the new retirement village laws mean for you
- find out where to get advice, information and support
- meet the VicAssist Retirement Villages team and learn about its free mediation and dispute resolution services
- have the opportunity to ask questions
The new reforms have introduced stronger rights and protections for residents in key areas. This includes maintenance and repairs, emergency planning, village decision-making, contract termination, and arrangements for selling and vacating their homes.
The reforms also established VicAssist Retirement Villages, a free service that helps residents and village operators manage disputes and reach fair agreements.
The Roadshow is free and tickets are still available for the final event in South Morang on Wednesday 23 September.
Current and prospective residents, as well as their families are welcome to attend.
A recording of one of the Roadshow events will be made available online in October.
