The history of Stuart Mill State School

  • 1870s

    Stuart Mill opened as a common school in 1870. The head teacher was Mr Saunders and he was helped by his wife. Classes were held in an unpainted timber schoolhouse.

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

    Alice Helliar became the first pupil teacher at the school in 1873 when there were around 160 students. She had been a student at the school when it opened in 1870.

  • 1880

    Mr and Mrs Saunders stopped teaching at the school after 10 years of service.

  • 1964

    Stuart Mill State School closed in 1964.
