The history of Yackandandah Primary School

  • 1870s

Yackdandah opened as a common school in 1872. It replaced Common School No. 694.

The first head teacher was John B. Besley.

The school building was brick and was built on the site next to No. 694.

The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

Another brick classroom was added in 1874.

  • 1891

A new brick room was built on a more central part of the school ground.

  • 1899

The wooden building from Eurobin State School (No. 1355) was removed and re-erected at Yackandandah. It was used as an infant room for younger children.

  • 1914

Two extra classrooms and a cloakroom were added in 1914. The school was also remodelled.

  • 1924

    A teacher's residence was purchased in 1924.

  • 1942

From 1942 until the end of the war, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) ‘used the head teacher's office as a control room for the Air Observation Corps'.

  • 1970

The school was renamed Yackandandah Primary School in 1970.

  • 2022

Yackandandah Primary School is still in operation. It marked its 150th anniversary this year.
