Bairnsdale became a common school in 1864 when the Government took over responsibility for a private school. Classes were held in a timber slab building with a shingle roof and earth floor.

The first head teacher was Charles Radford and the school was located on Macleod Street.

  • 1868

A new school building opened in 1868 at the present site of the school. Radford was still head teacher at the time. He was assisted by his wife, Rose Radford.

  • 1870s

The school became a state school between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1895
