The history of Hawthorn West Primary School
1853
Hawthorn West opened in 1853. It was called Hawthorn School at that time. The head teacher was James Dennithorne. The average number of students going to the school was 26. The schoolhouse was made from timber.
1854
The average number of students going to the school had increased to 79.
1862
The school became a common school in 1862.
1870s
The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.
1918
The school became a central school and students in grades 7 and 8 were taught at the school.
1921
In 1921, the first school room was rebuilt. The old bluestones were put back in their original position using new building methods.
1953
An event was held in November to recognise that the school had been open for 100 years.
1970
The school was renamed Hawthorn West Primary School in 1970.
2022
Hawthorn West Primary School is still in operation.
